A laptop with patriotic Canadian flag sticker shows up on stage as the multi-instrumentalist River Tiber (nee Tommy Paxton-Beesley) and his band takes over The Theatre at the Ace Hotel for Red Bull Sound Select’s “30 Days In LA” concert event opening for Nick Murphy. Imagine a little bit of Unknown Mortal Orchestra, throw some BADBADNOTGOOD jazz into the mix (who the band has actually collaborated with) and you have an idea of what River Tiber brings to the table.

Intricate harmonies, downcast vocals and dark electronic vibes envelope the theatre, hypnotizing the musical elitists of Los Angeles for the next 40 minutes. It’s no wonder why Red Bull enlisted the young singer/producer to perform for the second year in a row. River Tiver played compositions from his debut LP “Indigo” (2016); a self-released album filled with diverse material from the hip-hop influenced “Gravity” to the more experimental sounding “Flood”. He also included some of his earlier work and finished his set with “What Are You Afraid Of?” from “The Star Falls” EP (2013) which I found haunting and seductive. Slow beats that embrace a delicious guitar solo before finishing it with some twisted electronics? Soooo sensual.

River Tiber’s music is sonically unique and definitely a breath of fresh air. This Toronto native captured the audience’s attention with his sultry, bedroom jams and as a personal confession, this performance made it on my list for favorites of the year. This 24-year-old artist delivers a high-class cinematic performance, and is definitely worth checking.
