LOS ANGELES, CA- On June 13th, 2017, the Pom Poms, an L.A.-based psychedelic/garage rock band, celebrated the release of their album “Turn You Out” at The Echoplex. This is a band that I’ve had my eye on for a while. Over the course of the past year, I’ve binge-listened to their previous singles “Betty”, “123”, “Gimme You” (which are tracks 7, 8, and 9 on the new album), so getting to finally see them perform live and with their “new” repertoire was an anticipated treat for me.

Pom Poms’ music is both retro and modern at the same time. With fuzzy guitar riffs and 60s rock, synth lines permeating through the more uptempo tracks, their music is imbued with that “classic rock” aura. As I listen to Marlene Gold, the band’s lead singer, sing, I get flavors of Dusty Springfield and Shirley Bassey with big whopping spoonful of Tina Turner’s grit, sass, and sensuality.

What was fantastic about Pom Pom’s live show was the chance to see how Ms. Gold was able to bring Pom Poms’ music to life. While her bandmates played the music to perfection, it was hard not to be fully focused and engaged with Ms. Gold’s performance. Though she may be petite in stature, her presence on stage is pretty damn huge. As she crooned, cooed, and growled out the catchy melodies, all eyes were focused on her, captivated by the energy she laid bare on the stage.

They mixed up with set when they invited Ramonda Hammer‘s Devin Davis to the stage to sing a cover of Nirvana’s “Where Did You Sleep Last Night”, infusing it with a distinctly psychedelic vibe to it.
