LOS ANGELES, CA- Ninet Tayeb is a pretty big deal in her native Israel. Winning a nationally televised singing competition back in 2003 propelled her to instant stardom opened up doors for her in not only music but also in television and on stage (her starring role in an Israeli production of the stage musical “Spring Awakening” earned her a Best Actress nomination at the Israeli Theatre Awards).
In 2017, took steps to carry over her popularity in Israel to the United States, playing spot dates throughout the country in support of her most recent album “Paper Parachutes”.
The nine track album (which is sung entirely in English) seems to reveal a wide range of Ninet’s musical influences, but through a listen you can clearly hear what binds each selection to the collective whole; an unrelenting passion and emotional outpouring that is, at times, epic. Those feelings were on full display at the Moroccan Lounge on December 12, 2017.
Despite her celebrity and the grandeur of her music and performance, Ninet seems to be an innately reserved person. In between songs, she was soft-spoken and gracious when she addressed the audience. After the first song, she asked if anybody in the audience had some whiskey for her. Even with her huge popularity back home, perhaps she is still nervous about engaging a “new” foreign audience. But she had nothing to worry about on this night, as multiple glasses overflowing with whiskey soon lined the space next to her vocal monitor.
Her music, while definitely rock and roll, was imbued with middle-eastern musical elements. For me, that sound was particularly intriguing. It’s a sonic that really gave me a sense of who Ninet was as an artist: independent, self-assured and self-aware. Currently based out of Los Angeles, I’m personally looking forward to hearing how her music evolves from here.
