LOS ANGELES, CA- It’s been a busy 2018 for the Scottish singer-songwriter Nina Nesbitt. After releasing the third single, “Somebody Special”, from her forthcoming sophomore album, making the rounds at SXSW in March, and being handpicked by Spotify to be one of three female singer-songwriters to co-write and record Spotify’s inaugural single for their “Louder Together” program (“Psychopath ft. Nina, Charlotte Lawrence and Sasha Sloan), she joined Jake Bugg on his acoustic “Hearts That Strain” tour of the United States to showcase her own music stripped down to its barest essentials.
Nina’s music lends itself to the acoustic setting. Her bright pop melodies coupled with her sweet soprano voice and her knack for writing clear, straight forward relatable lyrics is all she needs to capture your attention. Don’t just take my word for it. Legend has it that that’s exactly what caught Ed Sheeran’s attention back in 2014 which led to him inviting her to support him on European tour at the young age of 17.
Her performance at The Ace was mix of both new and old music. One of the older songs she performed was “Stay Out”, which appeared on her 2014 debut album Peroxide. She prefaced the performance indicating that the song was co-written by Iain Archer, who happened to co-write a handful of songs for Jake Bugg. Perhaps she wanted to give the audience an explanation as to why or how she found herself opening up for Jake Bugg on this tour since their music is quite divergent, but I think she would have captured the audience’s attention with her lovely performance regardless.
Before performing her recent hit single, “Somebody Special”, she engaged the audience by politely asking whether they’d be willing to sing along with her. Her congenial personality got the audience to participate in singing the catchy hook, despite the a smattering of teasing boos after she explained the song was about an ex boyfriend who she ended up back with.
With a coy smile she quipped, “Sometimes things work out you guys.” Like her current relationship, I have a feeling that the rest of 2018 will work out just fine for Nina too.
Nina concludes her touring the United States with Jake on April 8th, but will continue touring on her own headlining U.S. tour until May 1st before finishing out the month of May with series of UK gigs.
