Nicole Dollanganger is a petit woman with soft voice, but don’t let all of that fool you. Her music is about as heavy as it gets. Whether singing about mental illness, sexual violence or death, Ms. Dollanganger’s airy voice will definitely give you chills, guaranteed.

It was almost a surprise to me when I saw her in the middle of a line-up featuring White Lung as the headliners. I thought that perhaps Red Bull Sound Select sandwiched her between the aggressive punk of White Lung and the free spirited indie rock of Dude York to provide the audience with a musical contrast. My initial thoughts were disapproved as soon I saw her band walk on stage.

Here is this petite, doll-like singer (pun kinda intended) accompanied on stage by four, big, burly metal looking dudes with their axes and sticks in tow. They accompanied Ms. Dollanganger with some raw and heavy metal sonics that was quite a departure … a good departure … from what I had previously been accustomed to. The heavier sound,  which may have been amplified by the small dimension of the venue, when it punched in during the middle of songs, gave her music a greater sense of urgency and anger that suited the lyrical content of her compositions. The contrast of her vocal stylings and her band’s playing was stark, but amazingly perfect, and has me anxious to hear how her forthcoming album will sound.
