LOS ANGELES, CA-  When you catch sight of headlights and taillights streaming down the 101, winking at you as they wrap their way around the dusky Hollywood Hills and snake back into East LA, there’s a certain sound that’s supposed to go along with that. We’re pretty certain it’s the new musical stylings of Madison McFerrin.

With vocals that conjure up lost and future lovers, McFerrin is best known for having a catalog totally consisting of acapella tracks, and for her captivating, looping live performances. All good things must evolve, and McFerrin is cruising into a new decade with her first fully-produced EP. The new effort, You + I, drops on December 4th.

She’s kicking off her national tour for the 6-track project tomorrow, 11/21, right here at The Echo in Los Angeles (stay tuned for a review from Blurred Culture). She’ll play 13 shows across North America, the first 4 of which she’ll be joined by co-headliner Tasha.

Last week, McFerrin debuted the music video for the second single off the album, “No Room. The track delivers the same atmospheric artistry that first earned McFerrin’s attention. It seems hard to believe that vocals can be so feather-light in one moment, so heavy with melancholy the next. And yet, on “No Room,” they are.

The subdued video is clean in its simplicity; McFerrin plays the protagonist with her sculptural face and hair keeping all the attention for themselves.  From the jump, it sounds like it might have been ripped right from the middle of a YouTube trip-hop “For Studying” mix. The dreamy quality is punctuated with synth warbles and ricochets that give it the necessary soul to put things back in McFerrin’s sweet spot. Truthfully, it’s late in the track, when all that extra noise cuts and looping acapella vocals take control—easing instruments back into the beat—that the unique magic of Madison finally wraps all around you.
