LOS ANGELES, CA- There are a lot of bands in Los Angeles, and odds are you could probably take any of them and say, “They’re kind of like such and such,” or, “They’re kind of like a mix of this and that.” You want to stump your buddy who thinks he know more about music than you? Ask him to describe Moon Honey’s music.
Catching Moon Honey at Girlschool would be my third time seeing them perform live, and I still don’t think I can adequately describe what it is I hear when I listen to their music. It’s controlled mayhem. It’s uninhibited spirituality. It’s a journey through something that’s kinetic and unyielding. It’s folk … it’s progressive … it’s baroque … it’s psychedelic … it’s jazz … it’s fusion … it’s Moon Honey.
Watching and listening to this band perform live is always a special treat. Jess Elaine Ramsey’s vocals always captivates me. Her eccentric vocals stylings perfectly suits the band’s mysterious lyrics. Even more of a treat is watching Andrew Martin lose himself on the axe. He becomes a man possessed, seemingly allowing the headstock guide him around the stage.
There were a handful of acts at Girlschool that truly evoked a genuinely positive surprised reaction from “first-timers”. Moon Honey was one of those acts. When I asked a fellow music lover what they thought about Moon Honey after watching them perform for the first time, I could see that her brain was looking for something evocative to say, but after a moment … like me when I caught Moon Honey for the first time last year … all she could say was, “That was something else.” Yup.
