Why I Wanted To See Mint Field: At the suggestion of one my close friends, it was recommended that I should attend the Miles Davis House while I was in Austin. It turns out my friend’s friend is Erin Davis, the son of seminal trumpeter and jazz legend Miles Davis.
Presented by Miles Davis Estates in association with Legacy Recordings/Sony Music Entertainment and Riviera Imports, The Miles Davis House is an annual SXSW day party hosted by the Miles Davis family and featuring a wide cross section of multi-genre emerging talent, the next generation of musical disruptors. In the spirit of Miles, the celebration promotes music, art and cultural progressiveness.
Mint Field (Amor Amezcua on synth and drums and Estrella Sanchez on guitar and voice) embodies that spirit as they expand upon shoegaze sonics that feel deeply rooted in emotional intensity. Having released their debut full length album “Pasar de las Luces” earlier in the year, and having eared some rave reviews even before the album was released, I was interested in checking them out.
What I Thought Of Mint Field’s Performance: Shoegaze, at least for me, is a difficult genre of music to watch live. To be honest, I’d much prefer listening to washed out, scuzzy, loud downtempo sonics while laying in bed after smoking a joint than standing with a crowd at a concert hall. But when the instrumentals beautifully soar, and the tension is so cinematic, my preconceptions can be immediately pushed aside.
The massive soundscapes this trio created in this mid-sized venue was pretty amazing. It was both rich yet chaotic and pulsed with the kind of melancholy that is generally typical of shoegaze. I didn’t mind it too much that the lyrics to their performance were pretty washed out because of their big sound, because the overall mood that they created with their music was just so beautifully overwhelming and hypnotizing. I wouldn’t have minded a joint though … but that’s a different story.
