LONG BEACH, CA- Mike Pinto’s One Love Cali Reggae performance really put me in a mellow, introspective state of mind. Plainspoken with a truly humble demeanor, his music floated across different genres, lightly tapping on various the musical elements of folk, ska, reggae and R&B. This amalgam of styles made him feel like an “everyman”, and that’s perhaps why I felt so comfortable during his performance.
Having grown up in Philadelphia, then traversing across the country to reside currently in San Diego, you get the sense that he’s soaked in all the different cultural experiences that he’s lived, and has somehow incorporated that regional and cultural knowledge seamlessly into his music. It feels like … and sounds like … authentic music. Music that speak straight from his soul. He uses reggae as the canvas, but he never lets reggae affect his lyrics or stylings … does that make sense?
I still need to delve into his repertoire to get a better sense of him and his music, but I look forward to the exploration.
