For every artist we decided to catch at SXSW, we decided to review each performance with our own version of “Five Ws and One H” answering the questions: 1) Who are they, 2) What kind of music do they play, 3) When did they play, 4) Where are they from, 5) Why did we decide to catch them play and 6), How was their performance.

WHO: Masha.

WHAT: Pop.

WHEN: 3/14/17 at Tellers Upstairs.

WHERE: New York, New York.

WHY: I’ve always been intrigued by the stories of talent who’ve achieved Youtube success. Masha started gaining attention after videos of her covering popular songs amassed hundreds of thousands of views. She’s definitely got the singing chops, but after watching the recent live-to-tape performance of her song “Lessons”, I decided to take a flier on her to see her perform some more of her original material.

HOW: There’s no doubt that Masha has the vocal ability and talent to make it as a recording artist outside of the Youtube world. She is a passionate performer and wears her heart on her sleeve when she’s in the spotlight. What was clear to me after watching her perform, however, is that song selection will be the key that will set her on her professional musical path. As was anticipated, for me the highlight of her set was when she sang “Lessons”. It was a truly genuine performance that made me feel like she was singing from somewhere personal, and connected with me on an emotional level. She performed a cover in her set, Chris Issak’s “Wicked Game”, but that performance lacked the emotional depth and authenticity that her performance of “Lessons” was flush with.

I’ve heard through the grapevine that she’s reworking her forthcoming album. I’ll be keen to hear what songs made the tracklist. Hopefully, it will be more “Lessons” than “Wicked Game”.
