For every artist we decided to catch at SXSW, we decided to review each performance with our own version of “Five Ws and One H” answering the questions: 1) Who are they, 2) What kind of music do they play, 3) When did they play, 4) Where are they from, 5) Why did we decide to catch them play and 6), How was their performance.

WHO: Marika Hackman.

WHAT: Alternative Folk/Rock.

WHEN: 3/15/17 at Latitude 30 presented by BBC Radio 2, PPL & PRS.

WHERE: London, England.

WHY: Truth be told, Ms. Hackman wasn’t on my list of SXSW artist’s to check out. Thankfully, for me, she was slotted between two artist that happened to be playing at the same venue. I can thank my lucky starts that the UK has such phenomenal talent.

HOW: From what little I knew about Marika, I thought her music leaned more towards the alternative folk genre … I should have done better research. When she took the stage she was joined by The Big Moon- an alt/grunge rock band that I had caught earlier in the day– who played as her backing band. Apparently, Marika and The Big Moon had worked together on several tracks, including this one.

This was definitely not folk, but it definitely rocked. For some reason, I got a little bit of a Jill Cunniff/Lucious Jackson type of vibe from Marika. Perhaps is was the casual confidence and deliberate vocal delivery, coupled with The Big Moon’s alt/grunge sonics, but I was feeling like I was back in the mid-nighties, and that was absolutely cool with me.

P.S.: Major kudos to The Big Moon for supporting their friend for this performance. Class act all the way.
