CARPINTERIA, CA- After the second polo match, the focus shifted back to the music. Indie/alternative artist Laura Pergolizzi, better known by her stage name LP, kicked off the second half of the day with an absolutely scene-stealing performance. As a songwriter, she has penned tracks for Cher, Rihanna, Christina Aguilera, the Backstreet Boys and others, but she’s building a solid collection of confident, well-crafted pop songs of her own, too. It makes sense that she writes songs for big voices; her voice has hints of Aguilera and Gwen Stefani, but a persona and tone all her own.
She opened with “Other People,” a melodic earworm that showcases Pergolizzi’s elastic vocals (and whistling only outdone by Andrew Bird), and closed with “Lost on You” — which boasts 74 million streams on Spotify — a song that found unexpected fame across the globe, in Europe especially. Last year, the soulful track “Muddy Waters” brought her to the attention of more American listeners when it featured prominently in the season four finale of Netflix’s Orange is the New Black.
While we were veritably impressed with LP’s live performance, we were even more impressed with the dedication of her fans. We found fans who made the 100 mile drive from Los Angeles and fans who made the 5700 mile journey from Europe. We found fans in their teens and found fans in their 60s. Gay and straight, male and female, and of every color of the rainbow, LP’s audience at the Santa BarbaraPolo & Wine Festival was basically a United Colors of Benetton ad that sang along to every lyric of every song.
While speaking with a handful of her fans prior to the performance, we were particularly struck by one fan in particular who expressed her love for the singer-songwriter with a simple statement, “Her music saved my life.” The honest look in the fan’s eyes wasn’t lost on me. Fierce, fearless and beautifully plainspoken, it’s quite easy to understand how LP’s powerfully honest music has that kind of effect on listeners.
