Her’s is a two-piece band of Stephen Fitzpatrick and Audun Laading. They describe their music as dream pop/jangle pop, and when I caught them perform at SXSW, I was so impressed with both their music and their performance, I had to flag them down for an interview. This is my short interview with Her’s. You next favorite U.K. band.

How did you guys get started as a group or how did you guys get into music?
STEPHEN: We got into music when we were both kind of young. I’m 21. Audun’s 23. We’ve been playing music for roughly 10 years between us. A long time. I mean the whole band thing, this doing touring and stuff is a very new experience.
Have you guys been friends a long time? Did you grow up with each other?
STEPHEN: No, no we met at university in Liverpool. We both traveled to live in Liverpool and bonded over the Beatles and whatnot.
AUDUN: Outsider…like Outsider type music a little bit. We’re resonating on a musical level like that.
STEPHEN: We’re both on the same kind of aesthetic wave.
AUDUN: Philosophical, musical wave length.
STEPHEN: Yes.
I’m a big fan of your song “Speed Racer”
STEPHEN: The music video for “Speed Racer” has just come out, but on May 12 we have our debut collection of songs. So, it’s not a debut album. It’s 8 songs, 4 of which we’ve already released and then there’s gonna be an additional amount of songs to go along with it so that’s coming out.
AUDUN: So you can get it on physical formats. The songs that have already come out don’t have any physical releases so we’d like to make like a big vinyl of it and stuff like that you know.
When you guys write music, where do you guys pull from to get your lyrics.
AUDUN: We try and not get bogged down in just emulating other music we like. We’ll try and pull… We’ll watch a movie and talk about them kind of vibes and we’ll like come up with different riffs for that kind of vibe. Coming Days and stuff like that. Like Twin Peaks has been a massive thing for that.
The television series?
AUDUN: Yeah, the television series. We’ve got a lot of inspiration from that in everything we do. I think part of the mystery of it is why it’s so good. It’s so aesthetically pleasing you want to watch it all the time.
Is that what you guys want to get across in your music?
STEPHEN: We’d like to sound like Twin Peaks ideally.
What are the rest of your plans this year in terms of touring and getting your music out there?
STEPHEN: We’re kind of aiming to come back to America hopefully in the summer if possible, but when we go back to the UK we’re starting in mid-April we’re starting a tour with a band called Happiness who were actually playing in Maggie May’s last night with R. Stevie Moore. So, yeah, we’re going to be doing a good two weeks with them. And we’ll be doing our own headline tour in the UK. Probably do a few more Europe dates, but the main aim is to come back here.
