On Day 6 of the 30 Days in LA concert series, Red Bull Sound Select presented us with a young and talented artist on the hip hop scene named Kweku Collins. At just nineteen years old, the Evanston, Illinois native has already released two projects since he was signed: the first being an EP called Say It Here, While It’s Safe that received much praise, and the second, a full-length debut album titled Nat Love. I had heard a few of the tracks off these project before attending the show to get a feel for what the “Ghost” singer was all about, and thoroughly enjoyed them. Mixing hip hop soul, trap beats, and hints of island guitar in his music, he delivers a distinctive sound. I was interested to see if his performance would be just as liberating as his music.

Kweku stepped out to the stage with nothing but energy and life, getting as close to the audience as he could and encouraging everyone to put their hands up and vibe with him. He radiated positivity all throughout the set, performing some his most loved tracks like “Stupid Rose”, “Never Say Die”, “Lonely Lullabies”, and the captivating “Delilah”.

As we all took a breather in the middle of his set, the culturally conscious Collins took some time out to discuss something serious: voting, which I appreciated. “I don’t know man… go out and vote! It’s important,” he shouted. He was passionate about his work and his words, and the audience felt the liveliness and spirit that infected the venue. Kweku Collins put on a wonderful set, and I’d definitely look out for more of his work.
