On January 31, Kristeen Young wrapped up a month long residency at The Hi Hat. Kristeen Young (nee Maria Callas) is an extremely accomplished musician, having worked with such artists like David Bowie, Dave Grohl and Morrissey, while releasing 7 of her own studio albums. With an eighth album that is soon to be released, “Live At the Witches Tit”, Kristeen gave her fans a sampling of what they can look forward to in April when it is released.

As I watched her perform, I was intrigued. I had never seen a keyboardist, other than maybe Ben Folds back in his Ben Fold Five days, attack a keyboard with such a ferocity like that which Kristeen played with. She played her keyboard with a measured recklessness that gave the music a palpable sense of danger that one hardly sees in a live setting. When she stepped away from her keyboard, she exhibited a flare for the dramatic, striking well-timed poses, contorting her body to the music that undulated around her.

I was also taken aback by her vocal range. She has the ability to coo like a seductress one moment, then bellow like an opera singer at another at the flick of a switch. That type of vocal control adds to the veritably deep emotional roots that is clearly laid out in the lyrical content of her music.

The fierceness of Kristeen’s performance is actually illustrated quite well in a music video she released earlier this month for the first single, “Nice”, off of her upcoming album which is embedded below.
