Los Angeles, CA — The marquee read correctly, Jill Scott sold out The Hollywood Bowl for LA Phil’s 2017 Jazz at The Bowl Summer Series. My excitement was through the roof! There’s nothing like witnessing such a talented chanteuse in action. Jill Scott is the perfect mixture of sex and righteousness and is the epitome of being black and proud.

Jill’s footsteps were highlighted by flashlights as she took to the stage in a flowy white gown. Kicking off her set with single, “Be Ready,” Jill set the tone of the night for the audience. “Be Ready” flowed into the melodic composition of “Golden” and “Whatever.” Her performance of “Whatever” was particularly splendid and could fill anyone listening with the hope of falling in love, getting married, and living happily ever after. Jill’s theatrics throughout the evening turned her show into an experience. Taking sips of wine between songs, it was clear she wanted to be comfortable and let loose … and let loose she did.

I’ve had some things I’ve had to organize ladies and gentlemen.” It was clear that this tour was just a friendly reminder to her dear fans that she is alive and well. Jill Scott recently married the love of her life in Tennessee last summer and has been on a bit hiatus, but no one seemed to care. This woman always delivers when she takes the stage, and if a little break is necessary for her to recharge or re-inspire her artistic juices, then, by all means, let her take it!

Her sexual performance of “Making You Wait” sent emotions through the roof (if one existed above The Bowl). Towards the end of the song, Jill mimicked a few sexual acts using her fingers and mouth. (Catch the reference because that’s as deep as I’m going to go). She had apparently gotten herself so hot with the song, she pulled out a big red church fan and waved it all over her body as she slyly gave the audience a mischievous smile.

Throughout the show, she’d drop a few gems, “Some people you gotta give them your C-game because if you give them your A-game, you might get stuck with them.” I took that as a word and put my hands in the air.

Everyone was on their feet during “It’s Love,” but it was her performance of “Star Spangled” that left us all speechless. Seeing images of the many black lives that have been taken by police and reflecting on the events in Charlottesville, Jill reminded us just how black she was and how proud of her culture she is. The lyrics, “This is not the land of the free but the home of the slave” rang so loud throughout the venue. Jill closed out with a call to action asking that we get our shit together before serenading us one last time with “He Loves Me.”
