WEST HOLLYWOOD, CA- With the release of their debut album, “Better Strange”, in early 2016, James Supercave kept themselves busy imbuing their infectious psych-pop to the masses, putting their best foot forward to earn the ears of more fans. Those fans came out in full force at their gig at the Troubadour on 12/17/16.
Their sonics have never sounded better. Joaquin Pastor, Patrick Logothetti, Andres Villalobos and company rattled through their setlist of layered and atmospheric rhythms and synths with a kind of polish that reflected how tightly knit the players were. From the atmospheric (“Chairman Gou”) to the body-movers (“Burn”), their set was a fantastic voyage into the diverse mindset and musicality of this Echo Park based band.
Joaquin Pastor, the lead singer, seemed to exude a subdued confidence, actively interacting with his band through the set. His bandmates, likewise, seemed to exude the same energy as well, especially when the tempo of their tunes picked up.
Clearly, the audience was feeling that energy too. It’s not often that I see fans jump on stage to join the band, as that kind of act is taboo in the concert-going world, but as the band’s inhibitions on stage loosened up towards the end of their set, so did the crowd’s, and by the end of the evening security had to escort fans off stage … on several occasions.
The look on Joaquin’s face as each wave of fans climbed up on stage was one of pleasant surprise. He was obviously taken aback, but that didn’t stop him from joining his ardent fans in the dance they were performing on stage, enjoying the moment that while not common place, was definitely “better strange”.
