ECHO PARK, CA- On December 2nd, 2017, the band HUNNY held their second annual “Winter Talent Show” at The Echoplex. With 7 diverse acts in the line-up, we knew it would be a good one. After a funky post-punk set by French Vanilla, San Fransisco’s Kevin Patrick p/k/a “Field Medic” took the stage solo to mellow out the mood with his heartfelt “freak folk” (his own Facebook description).
Armed with just his acoustic guitar, and sometimes accompanied by a pre-recorded drum track that was played from a tiny boom-box that was on loan from a friend since his own boom-box had kicked the bucket, he performed a set that was perhaps the most honest and heartfelt of the evening. His simple, lo-fi sound was the perfect soundtrack to express a gamut of emotions ranging from yearning to true love.
Apparently, I was one of the few in the audience who knew little about Field Medic and his his music. At certain points during his performance, groups of attendees throughout the venue would sing along with Kevin, but they would never sing loud enough to overpower the performance happening on stage. It was almost as though they were whisper-singing along, ensuring that they could still hear Kevin’s fragile yet crystalline voice emote.
Though there may have been some somber overtones sprinkled here and there in the lyrics, Field Medic’s performance was generally lighthearted, and you could tell that he was reveling in the opportunity to perform. The music and performance was a refreshingly honest look into the soul of an artist who seems to truly sing and write from the heart. Having recently released a new album, “songs from the sunroom” (stet) on November 10, 2017, I’m sure he’ll be touring domestically in 2018 to promote the same. I’d recommend giving him, and his music, a look.
