AUSTIN, TX- One of the most pleasant surprises that I had at SXSW in 2018 came from the Melbourne, Australia based singer songwriter of Tongan Decent, Fatai. In 2018, she was part of an all Australia line-up, and though I hadn’t pencilled her into my 2019 schedule, I just happened to stumble upon another showcase of Australian talent on March 15th. If that isn’t kismit, I don’t know what is.
Like last year, Fatai performed a solo acoustic set, but this time on a small stage at Lucille Patio Lounge for G’Day USA. It was an assuming space, in an unassuming location, but Fatai’s voice is so undeniable and it literally had pedestrians who were walking down the street adjacent to the stage stop in their tracks, and peer around the makeshift stage awning, to see who it was that was singing.
There is something just so natural about the way Fatai sings. Whether it’s passionately belting or softly cooing melodies, you can’t help but hang on every note. And it’s not only the way she sings; it’s also what she sings. Her lyrics aren’t mired with metaphor. They are beautifully plainspoken. They tell colorful stories, both personal and global, in the everyman’s tongue, and each story has a way of pulling on your heartstrings.
Now … how she phrases and sings those lyrics are otherworldly, that’s a totally different story (Fatai can sang!), but the essence of her and her music are so human, you can’t help but connect with her and her talent. She has the power to move, and for the second SXSW in a row, I was moved.
