“This is probably the nicest looking stage we’ve ever had”, says KROQ’s Nicole Alvarez as she’s maneuvering through the mini jungle of chords, synths and other musical instruments on stage. Another week, another major show at the Red Bull SoundSpace. This time it’s not just the music on display, but also fashion from the Australian band Empire of the Sun. Dressed in their trademark outfits, Luke Steele and Nick Littlemore were kind enough to stop by and give a quality performance to their dedicated LA fans in support of their 4th studio album which will be dropping very soon.

“It’s our a little bit more stripped down performance today”, laughs the singer during a brief pregame interview with Nicole. If you ever had a pleasure witnessing an Empire of the Sun performance you know these Aussies give 100% in every respect. The props, the dancers, the fireworks, the outfits, the list goes on and on.

“Have you ever thought of having a Vegas residency?” Alvarez asked. Luke laughs and gives a wily look to someone backstage, “Funny you asked… I’ve been emailing everyone about this idea for months now”. Apparently the Empire of the Sun team shelved the idea for now … but there’s still hope! Right ?!

Empire of the Sun at RedBull Sound Space at KROQ 9/7/16. Setlist. The band kicked off their set with an older tune “Tiger By My Side”. The amount of energy these guys have is electrifying. It’s pleasing to see artists who’ve been around for a while getting so engaged with the fans. During “Breakdown” and “Concert Pitch”, the singer grabbed a second mic and jumped into the crowd letting the fans sing along and share the experience. I highly doubt that this happens during their other shows considering that the group plays huge venues compared to the preciously intimate Sound Space. This was truly a once in a lifetime experience.

I’ve been to so many shows here thanks to Blurred Culture and RedBull, but this was the only time I saw a band leave their fans little souvenirs (even tho Death Cab did give away a towel when they played here last year… does it count?? Luke brought a Polaroid camera with him and occasionally would snap a pictures of the crowd/band/host, giving them away to the fans as it devleoped. I was on to get into a polaroid snap with a stupid but happy looking grin. The girl wasn’t ready for such attention!

Before closing their set with their newest hit “High & Low”, the band thanked KROQ for playing it and supporting their craft (how sweet) leaving the audience satisfied and definitely high on music.
