For every artist we decided to catch at SXSW, we decided to review each performance with our own version of “Five Ws and One H” answering the questions: 1) Who are they, 2) What kind of music do they play, 3) When did they play, 4) Where are they from, 5) Why did we decide to catch them play and 6), How was their performance.

WHO: Dream Wife, a band with a core trio consisting of Rakel Mjöll (lead vocals), Alice Go (guitar, vocals) and Bella Podpadec (bass, vocals).

WHAT: They call it “poolside pop with a bite” on their Facebook page. I call it pop-punk with sass. Call it what you like, it kicks ass either way.

WHEN: BBC Radio 1, PPL & PRS Presents @ Latitude 30  3/14/2017.

WHERE: “London based with one Reykjavik drifter”.

WHY: I’m all about a solid live performance. I spent tons of time on youtube watching a lot of live performance clips. I knew nothing about Dream Wife. Then I saw this video:

HOW: I thought they were good in the video above. I mean, that was the whole reason why I decided to put them on my list to begin with. But, when I saw them live at Latitude 30 …. they smashed all of my expectations into a million little pieces.

Each of the members capably hold their own on stage, playing with the kind of energy and exuberance you’d expect from people their age (side note: I was standing in front of Alice Go during the performance, and as a photographer, she was terrific fun to shoot). But what sets them apart from other punk-pop bands is that their music and their performance is able to seamlessly meld a bad ass sense of punk mischievousness with a carefree sense of youthful joy. Their music is catchy (great even), but it’s the attitude that they play with on stage that will hook you. It’s so wonderfully contagious, that you can’t help but let it infect you with it.

And their star shines a little brighter than others because of the attitude and spunk that emanates from their front-woman, Rakel Mjöll. As the stage lights perfectly illuminated her face, she sneered, snarled, smirked and smiled into the audience while holding stoic and confident poses. She looks almost too angelic to be punk … but when she sneers and shouts through “FUU” and “Hey Heartbreaker”, a certain Riot Grrrl je ne sais quoi is unleashed and you can’t help but want to sneer along with her.

High energy, high attitude and high fun, I highly recommend seeing this band live if you ever get the chance.
