HOLLYWOOD, CA- Los Angeles has always had a thriving underground hip hop scene. From Freestyle Fellowship to Open Mike Eagle, the music that bumps on the outskirts of the mainstream is still relevant and draws in plenty new fans with every new rhyme. Earlier this month, a new era of underground rap repped by Dezzy Hollow, Reverie and Hideandseekzoo descended onto the Sunset Strip to grace the legendary stage of The Roxy.

The up and coming hip-hop HideAndSeekZoo is, in my humble opinion, rap at its finest. With mellow beats and powerful lyrics, he really reminds me of some of those “classics” that I use to listen to “back in the day” in middle school. I’m a huge fan of hip-hop, so seeing HideAndSeekZoo for the first time was actually a really great experience. The technicality of his wordplay impressed me the most. The way he spit rhymes was pure fire, and the fact that he did it on such live stage was a real treat.

Underground hip hop has really become a means- a tool- that allows artists to really express their souls; to say whatever is on their mind over a really nice instrumental no matter what age you are. I think HideAndSeek does exactly that plus more with an inspirational personality. The crowd was more than welcoming for him and I personally love the energy he brings to the stage.

Dezzy Hollow is a great rapper who is very energetic on stage. You can tell that he just loves to make and perform music on stage. I did not know what to expect when he started performing on stage, but as soon as he engaged the audience, you could feel the energy that was being exchanged between performance and patron.

His performance lasted for approximately forty-minutes, but he could have easily kept the audience entertained for another hour with with his raw lyricism and dope beats. It was a performance that kept everyone on their toes, and the crowd reciprocated that vibe by dancing along to his sonic. It warmed my heart to see a crowd of all ages together enjoying the music and enjoying that moment together.

Fun Fact, I remember listening to Reverie around my high school years and I never thought that I would actually have the pleasure of taking pictures of her show.

Her music is life. It’s filled with so much emotion and rage it’s barely contained. With every lyric she spits, you can just feel all of that emotion and rage that she’s bringing pour out on the stage, no holds barred.

Every song tells a story, and the listener hangs on every syllable she raps, commiserating and empathizing  with all of the sentiments and history from her life that are embodied in her lyrics.  Reverie is constantly makes new music for her fans, and a lot of it dealt with bad breakups and broken hearts. What she’s felt, we’ve all felt, and there’s nothing more human and relatable than that.

Underground female rappers are difficult to come by, especially with a flow that is as dream-like as Reverie. With the entire crowd reciting songs lyric for lyric and bobbing their heads to the beat, it was clear that Reverie was an inspiration to all the hip-hop fans in the room, and she gave everyone the room a performance to be proud of bringing her A-game.
