With four stages each complete with stellar lineups, the challenge for Saturday at Music Tastes Good was how to navigate through the musical sea of awesomeness without feeling like something great was missed. Thankfully, any impending fear of missing out was quelled by experiencing the magnetic performance of Jessica Hernandez &The Deltas.

My friend and I were on our way to see a different band when we were suddenly stopped in our tracks by the enticing trombone and explosive energy beckoning us to the JetBlue Stage. Without even asking the question, we both looked at each other and said, “Hell Yeah!”

The party was in full swing when we arrived about five songs in. The overwhelming excitement, both on and off the stage, was instantly contagious, and without even realizing it I found myself bouncing like a fool with a big grin on my face. I was not alone. The audience danced with fervor and sang along, fully engaged with the powerful performance of Jessica Hernandez & The Deltas. Each of the six members brought a unique style and energy to the performance — and what a performance it was. Jessica Hernandez may be small in stature but her big booming voice and large presence filled the stage. Boy, does Jessica sure know how to play to an audience. Her style, especially in showmanship, reminded me of Gwen Stefani from the No Doubt days.

They slowed things down with their second to last song, a new Spanish song called “Telephone”. Sadly, I don’t know Spanish, but that didn’t even matter, I was hooked. The crowd was transfixed, hanging on every word … every note … I made a mental note to learn Spanish. The dial was turned back up for their last song, “Deceptacon,” (a Le Tigre cover) and the crowd went wild.

I left feeling like I just attended the best surprise party that ended too soon. I highly recommend checking them out … and if you’re lucky enough, experiencing them live is truly a gift that shouldn’t be missed.
