AUSTIN, TX- For most of our SXSW artist coverage, we’ll keep it relatively short and sweet. Why I Wanted To See Chris Price: At the suggestion of one my close friends, it was recommended that I should attend the Miles Davis House while I was in Austin. It turns out my friend’s friend is Erin Davis, the son of seminal trumpeter and jazz legend Miles Davis.
Presented by Miles Davis Estates in association with Legacy Recordings/Sony Music Entertainment and Riviera Imports, The Miles Davis House is an annual SXSW day party hosted by the Miles Davis family and featuring a wide cross section of multi-genre emerging talent, the next generation of musical disruptors. In the spirit of Miles, the celebration promotes music, art and cultural progressiveness.
When I saw the line-up that was scheduled, I decided that I may as well spend an afternoon taking in some tunes at Antone’s. It just so happened that Chris Price was the first artist to take the stage.
What I Thought Of Chris Price’s Performance: The name Chris Price seemed awfully familiar to me. I racked my brain before he took the stage trying to remember where I’d heard the name before. Unfortunately, I couldn’t recall. That didn’t stop me from enjoying his solo performance though.
Lap tapping his acoustic guitar, he played a breezy set that was pretty eclectic. You’d think that just cause he was onstage with an acoustic guitar, seated no less, that he was just going to play a folksy Americana style type of music, but that couldn’t have been anything further than the truth. There were definitely indie folk vibes going on, but I noted that there were some indie and psychedelic rock influences in his songwriting.
I made a mental note to do a little research on him when I was prepping to post my SXSW reports, and as I delved into world of liner notes and other artist’s that I’ve covered in the past, I discovered that Chris had actually worked on Linda Perhacs comeback album. In fact, I actually photographed Chris when he performed with Linda back in 2014 at Santa Monica’s Way Over Yonder music festival! When I put two and two together, it all made sense,
