AUSTIN, TX- If not for ATC Live and The BPI’s showcased for the British Music Embassy at SXSW, I’m not sure that I would have ever discovered the post-punk goodness of Black Midi. Having recently signed to Rough Trade Records, they just released their latest single, a whirling dervish of a song, “Talking Heads”.
I wouldn’t even classify their sound as post-punk. If you are able to find their repertoire online (Spotify only has a couple- literally two- official, solo tracks, so your best bet is to scour Youtube for video clips), you’ll soon discover that it’s almost too avant-garde to do so. How would you classify the music that Mike Patton has recorded? Well, Black Midi takes that kind of fearless approach to their music, seasoning their sound with a little bit of everything. From punk, to post-punk, to math rock, to psychedelia, their music is a melting pot of genres that makes for some particularly intriguing and exciting noise.
Listening to these young chaps perform was exhilarating. Their music was wild roller coaster of ebbs and flows of dynamism, and I caught myself actively trying to keep up with all of the tempo changes and melodic shift in each song. While the music swirled around them, Black Midi’s lead guitarist/vocalist, Geordie Greep, maintained a creepily cool air about him as he sang each song’s lyrics. His stoic presence center stage rooted the band’s emotionally, wild sonics … that is … until he stepped away from the mic to shred away during instrumental frenzies.
In and interview with Loud And Quiet, Geordi spoke of the idea of “progression” in the band’s music:
“In two years, Black Midi’s music will be unrecognisable compared to what it is today. We just want to use the available resources to make something good. Make something good. Make something good. That’s our mission.”
I hope that see through on that mission. Make something good, Black Midi. Make something good.
