Hailing from Brooklyn, New York, the indie electro quartet Bear Hands  graced one of Make Music Pasadena’s stages on 6/11/16. This was my first time watching them perform live, and they put on a hell of a show, proving to me that the relentless touring they have racked up over the years opening for bands like Vampire Weekend, Passion Pit and Cage The Elephant certainly have paid off.

Bear Hands got comfortable on the damp stage in Pasadena. Real comfortable. Dylan Rau, their lead singer, performed the set sans shoes exposing his red tipped socks to the audience. In between, and during, songs band members would slink their way to the edges of the stage to sip on strategically placed open cans of beer.

Mr. Rau’s cool demeanor on stage … an oddly enticing blend of intensity and nonchalance … balanced the frenetic key and guitar driven instrumentals of his bandmates and set the stage for a performance that connected with the audience amidst the cool, wet weather. So engaging was their performance, they had their fans standing the light drizzle singing and dancing along with them. There aren’t many bands that can create that kind of intimacy with an audience in that particular setting, but Bear Hands did.

Bear Hands will be touring all summer with Atlas Genius, and I would recommend getting to the venue early to catch them perform. You shouldn’t be disappointed.
