After her Namasenda’s set, I was able to converse with a couple of the other media people that were there covering the show. We talked about other 30 Days gigs we had coming up, shows we had done in the past and just general conversations about gear and other things photographers usually talk about. When it came time for Sampa The Great to take the stage, the three of us quickly switched it into gear.
The Australian based, Zambia born, rapper took the positive vibes Namasenda set moment’s earlier, and ran with it. Sampa’s set brought more of what I have come to love from the hand-full of hip hop shows I have attended. It was fierce, raw and energetic. She had this ability that allowed her to almost sing certain verses then immediately slam into hard hitting bars that had this Los Angeles crowd throwing up their hands in the air.
Although this artist is from Australia, she resonated with the west coast quite amazingly and I was surprised when I found out she wasn’t even from this country. With a mixtape that received crticial acclaig released last year simply and accurately tilted The Great Mixtape, Sampa The Great has been taking her show around the globe, even performed with the great Kendrick Lamar earlier this year. I would definitely say this is an artist to keep an eye out for.
